Pilot killed in light aircraft crash in West Yorkshire

A light aircraft has crashed in West Yorkshire, killing the pilot.

The 31-year-old was the only person on the one-seater which came down in a field next to the River Aire between Castleford and Methley.

West Yorkshire Police received several calls from members of the public about the crash. They said no-one on the ground was injured.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is investigating the crash, which happened just after 1600 BST.

A police spokesman said: "Emergency services attended and located the wreckage of a one-seater light aircraft in a field next to the River Aire.

"It had been piloted by a 31-year-old local man who was confirmed by paramedics to have died at the scene," he said.

The aircraft had not come into contact with any other buildings or structures as a result of the crash, the spokesman added.
