Torbay man dies trying to save brother at sea
A man who died in the sea at a beach in south Devon was attempting to rescue his brother, coastguards have revealed.
The 55-year-old swam out at Preston Sands in Torbay at about 1200 BST on Friday to rescue his brother, who had got into difficulty.
However, during the rescue attempt the man, who has not been officially identified, got into trouble himself.
A coastguard team tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene. His brother got back to shore safely.
Other members of the dead man's family were also at the beach during the incident.
Coastguards said the conditions at sea were good at the time and it was not yet known exactly why the 55-year-old had got into difficulty.
Police said it appeared to be a "tragic accident" and the coroner had been informed.
