A man who admitted having sex with a 13-year-old girl and her 14-year-old friend has been put on probation for three years.

Jason Alexander, 24, of Aberdeen, was also ordered to complete 280 hours community service.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of having under-age sex.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard Alexander had been suffering from a mental illness at the time of the offences, which began in December 2008.

Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen said he had considered a custodial sentence with a supervised release.

The sheriff ordered that Alexander be placed on the sex offenders register for three years.

Alexander had sex with the youngest of the girls at a spot on the outskirts of Inverness, a hotel in the city, his mother's home in Elgin and his own home in Aberdeen.

The second girl met him at weekends but she said they only had sex once.

The court heard that Alexander believed the girls to be older than they were.
