Avon and Somerset Police target summer drinkers

A total of 95 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving during the first three weeks of Avon and Somerset Police's summer campaign.

Operation Tonic has seen more than 23,500 motorists stopped and 1,513 breath-tested.

A force spokeswoman said many of the drivers stopped told officers they supported the campaign.

"Our message is if you drink and drive you will be caught," she added.

In 2009 seven people were killed and 35 seriously injured in drink-drive related collisions in the force area.

Operation Tonic was launched on 1 June and has seen officers carry out high-visibility stop-checks to raise awareness of the dangers of drink-driving and to target repeat offenders.
