Injured Pc airlifted from Formby beach

A police officer had to be airlifted from a beach on Merseyside after he fell off a quad bike while on duty.

The Pc was patrolling Formby beach when he came off the vehicle at about 1600 BST by Fisherman's Path, off Montague Road, a police spokesman said.

The officer, who is in his 40s, had pains in his chest and leg. A road ambulance was unable to reach him so the air ambulance had to be scrambled.

He was taken to Southport Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "At this early stage it is not clear how the officer came to be injured however the force can confirm that no other person or vehicle was involved.

"Officers from the Roads Policing Investigation Unit are at the scene and an investigation is under way."
