The long-gestating remake of 1984 film Footloose has another lead actor, Paramount Pictures has announced.

The character Ren McCormack will now be played by Kenny Wormald, a 25-year-old dancer best known for his appearances on MTV reality show Dancelife.

High School Musical star Zac Efron and Gossip Girl actor Chace Crawford had previously been linked to the role, originally played by Kevin Bacon.

The film, directed by Craig Brewer, is set to be released on 1 April 2011.

Brewer took over the project after the withdrawal of Hairspray director Adam Shankman and High School Musical's Kenny Ortega.

"I can promise Footloose fans that I will be true to the spirit of the original film," said Brewer, director of the Oscar-winning Hustle and Flow.

"But I still gotta [sic] put my own Southern grit into it and kick it into 2011," he added.

Set in a small town in the American Midwest, Footloose tells of a young man who rebels against a law banning rock music and dancing.

Dennis Quaid and country star Julianne Hough have also been cast, in roles originally played by Jon Lithgow and Lori Singer respectively.
