Tesco site in St Albans to be used for housing

A Tesco-owned site in a Hertfordshire city could be used for housing after the supermarket decided not to build a store there.

The supermarket will open a store on the site of the former Woolworths in St Peter's Street in St Albans instead.

St Albans council said Tesco had made a "full commitment" to refurbishing buildings on land it owns in London Road in the centre of the city.

The council is currently looking for a developer for housing on the site.

Commercial buildings are also part of the plans being discussed by the council and the supermarket.

The council's head of planning and building control, Heather Cheesbrough: "We will continue to hold discussions with Tesco in order to ensure that the boarded-up buildings in London Road and Inkerman Road are swiftly refurbished and brought back into use."
