Burning firework thrown in to bus in Southend

A burning firework has been thrown at a bus in Essex.

The firework narrowly missed two passengers and caused £200 damage when it burned out on a seat.

The incident happened late on Thursday night on board a number 20 bus in Victoria Avenue, Southend.

When the bus stopped at a junction near St Mary's Church, a Renault Clio car pulled alongside and one of the occupants threw the lighted firework through the window.

Two passengers on the bus were shaken but unharmed and the vehicle had to be taken out of service.

Pc Atif Chaudry said: "The bus driver had stopped the vehicle at the junctions of Victoria Avenue, East Street and West Street when the silver Clio drew up alongside in the right hand lane of the dual carriageway.

"There were four or five people in the car and one of them threw the firework into the bus.

"We would like to trace the two bus passengers, who were both women, and would like to hear from anyone else who saw what happened."
