Residents in adjacent flats were also led to safety, although it is not known how many were moved.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said the fourth and fifth floors of the building were affected by the blaze.

She said: "Ten flats were extensively damaged by the fire.

"The adjacent block of eight flats was also evacuated as a precaution."

The fire service said seven engines were in attendance at the blaze at its height.
