Primary school children in County Durham are to continue to receive free school meals, the county council has said.

The government-funded pilot began in September and aims to improve health, behaviour and school performance.

There had been fears it would be affected by the recent change in government.

However, Durham County Council has reassured parents that it will continue until July 2011.

Children due to start reception class in September will automatically be registered for free school meals.

Cllr Claire Vasey, cabinet member for children and young people's services at the council, said: "Around 90% of all primary school children in the county are now benefitting from a nutritious meal at lunchtime.

"We would like to take this opportunity to allay fears that this service will stop."
