Poole coastguards rescue man in toy dinghy

A man has been rescued from his 4ft toy dinghy after spending more than six hours in the water overnight.

Poole RNLI Lifeboat, the inshore lifeboat and Poole coastguards were dispatched after reports of cries for help a mile west of Bournemouth Pier.

The 40-year-old, who was not wearing a life jacket, was picked up at 0320 BST.

A spokesman said: "If he had ended up in the water even with the temperatures at the moment hypothermia does not take long to set in."

He added: "He was not prepared at all, he went out to sea with basically no safety options, no safety equipment and possibly no real idea of procedures he needed to follow when he was out there.

"Once you are at sea, if you start to drift out you have got no real way of getting ashore.

"The type of craft he was in was not designed to be used on the sea at all.

"To actually locate him, in this instance, we were lucky that the weather was good and his cries for help were heard."
