About 20 people have spent a second night away from their homes as a fire continues to burn at a tyre depot in South Yorkshire.

Firefighters are continuing to tackle the blaze involving 120,000 tyres at the White Lea Grove industrial units in Mexborough which began early on Monday.

Residents forced out of their homes on Monday morning were able to return on Tuesday evening to collect belongings.

But the Health Protection Agency advised them not to stay overnight.

South Yorkshire Fire Service said they had been offered alternative accommodation by Doncaster Council at a nearby hotel.

'Excellent progress'

It is hoped that the residents will be able to return home on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, about 20 firefighters remain at the scene.

A South Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said: "Firefighters have made excellent progress extinguishing the blaze.

"It is expected that firefighting operations will be scaled down even further later this evening, with one appliance remaining in attendance overnight."

Local people who were not forced to leave their homes are still advised to keep doors and windows closed and remain indoors if possible due to the amount of smoke affecting the area.
