The former Dean of St Edmundsbury in Suffolk has died after a long illness.

The Very Reverend Neil Collings, 63, joined the cathedral in 2006 but retired due to ill health last year.

He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in October 2008 and despite surgery the cancer returned in recent months. He died at his home in Devon on Saturday.

His funeral will take place on 6 July in Exeter Cathedral, with a memorial service planned in Bury St Edmunds in the coming months.

He had moved to Devon in January to be close to his father and brother.

The Revd Canon Dr Frances Ward was appointed his successor in May and will move from her role as Residentiary Canon and Canon Theologian at Bradford Cathedral on 16 October.
