Warning after rise in Leicester burglaries

Residents have been warned to keep their houses secure after a series of burglaries in Leicester.

Police said there had been 19 burglaries reported in the New Parks, Abbey Rise and Beaumont Leys areas in the past week.

In 12 of these access was gained through an open window or patio door, officers revealed.

People have been urged to keep entrances secure, especially in hot weather.

Sergeant Rich Jackson, from the Beaumont Leys Neighbourhood Team, said: "The warm weather gives opportunist thieves even more chances to commit crime.

"Although it is tempting to leave your windows and doors open during the evening and night this can make your property extremely vulnerable and many recent burglaries across the area have been the result of open windows or unlocked doors."

Other measures, such as distribution of Smartwater marking fluid and the registering of property, are also being put in place.
