A police woman has been injured after being struck on the back of the head with a brick in Newtownabbey.

The neighbourhood officer was responding to a call about a group of young people in the Glenabbey Drive area at about 1600 BST on Wednesday.

When officers arrived the young people left and a female officer was struck by a brick which was thrown from the viaduct.

Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Paula Hilman said: "Neighbourhood officers have been working with the local community and our partner agencies tirelessly to tackle issues and concerns in the area.

"They responded to a report from the local community and an officer has been hurt as she tried to resolve the situation.

"This is unacceptable.

"I would ask anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to contact us.

"I would also ask for the continued support of the community in tackling this type of behaviour and helping us address antisocial behaviour."
