Hundreds without gas in the Isle of Man

Hundreds of people are without a gas supply in the Isle of Man after a valve collapsed at a production plant on Wednesday afternoon.

Manx Gas said about 750 homes and businesses using natural gas, rather than liquid petroleum gas (LPG), are affected in Castletown and Colby.

Customers are being urged to turn off all gas appliances and equipment.

Manx Gas said engineers need access to every property affected in order to restore supply as soon as possible.

Acting managing director of Manx Gas, Robert Gardner, said locksmiths would be used if necessary to gain access to properties.

He stressed a note would be left in every property the engineers enter unattended.

Customers are being told they must leave gas supplies off until they are advised it is safe to turn them back on.

Manx Gas has apologised for the inconvenience caused but said supplies should be fully restored by late afternoon.
