Dozens of fish in Batley pond die in heat

Up to 100 fish have been found dead in a park pond in West Yorkshire because of the warm weather.

Officers from the Environment Agency said oxygen levels in the water at Wilton Park in Batley have plunged during the dry, warm weather.

Park staff are removing the dead fish and the fire service has agreed to pump oxygen into water at the weekend.

Kirklees Council said it was working with the Environment Agency to monitor the situation.

Tom Raper, parks' divisional manager, said: "We apologise for any distress caused to the visiting public this weekend but every effort is being made to prevent further fish losses."
