Crime at the St Pauls Carnival in Bristol was down on last year despite an increase in the crowds who joined in the celebrations, police have said.

More than 70,000 people were estimated to have come -10,000 more than in 2009.

Ch Insp Steve Kendall, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "The event was a great success, there was a real party atmosphere.

"We made a small number of arrests - mainly for minor alcohol-related offences and assaults."

A clean-up team of 35 men has been out since 0600 BST clearing up the rubbish left behind.
