Bangladesh fines for defying flag

Bangladeshis who defy the national flag or the country's national anthem will in future face a prison sentence and a fine, officials say.

The government has approved the draft for a law that makes disgracing national symbols punishable with up to a two-year jail term and a $140 fine.

The move was approved at a meeting chaired by PM Sheikh Hasina.

Details of exactly what will constitute a punishable offence are still to be worked out.
