A teenager has died in hospital two days after being stabbed during a fight in east London.

The 16-year-old, who has not been identified, was attacked at about 0100 BST on Sunday in Denbigh Road, Newham.

It is thought he was chased by a group of youths on bikes before being attacked. He died in hospital on Tuesday.

He is the 14th teenager murdered in London this year - equalling the total for the whole of 2009.

Police have started a murder inquiry and asked members of the public with information to contact them.

Last week 15-year-old Zac Olumegbon was stabbed to death when he and a friend were ambushed at the gates of their school in south London.

Four teenagers are still being questioned about the attack which took place near Park Campus School, West Norwood, on Friday.

Among the other teenagers to have been killed in London this year are 16-year-old Nicholas Pearton, who was beaten and stabbed in a park in Sydenham last month.

And in April Agnes Sina-Inakoju was shot through the window of a takeaway restaurant in Hoxton Street, Hackney, east London

In 2007, 28 teenagers were murdered in the city while 30 were killed the following year.

Youth crime groups had hoped the problem was subsiding after the number of teenagers murdered last year fell to 14.
