An 11-year-old boy has died in hospital after he was hit by a car while riding a skateboard in West Sussex.

James Howard, from Hassocks Road, Hurstpierpoint, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton on Wednesday but later died.

Sussex Police said he was hit by a Ford car in South Avenue, Hurstpierpoint, just after 1800 BST.

In a statement, his parents Lawrence and Sandra Howard said he "brought the joy out in everything he did".

'Wonderful, lovely boy'

"Everyone remembers him as always being so full of fun, energy and enthusiasm in everything he did.

"He had a huge range of friends and he was always able to make everyone laugh," they said.

Mr and Mrs Howard said they were devastated at the loss of their "wonderful, lovely boy", as was his 10-year-old sister Anna, who had lost her best friend.

"It was just a tragic accident that was no-one's fault.

"At least we still have our beautiful daughter Anna who we must support during this terrible time for all of us," they said.

Anyone who saw the accident, or the events leading up to it, is asked to contact Sussex Police.
