Man arrested after sexual assault in Barnsley

Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with a serious sexual assault on a woman in Barnsley.

He has been released on bail until mid-September while further police enquiries are made.

Police have stepped up patrols following the incident on 24 June at the Dearne Valley Trail near Elsecar Reservoir in Barnsley.

It happened as the 50-year-old woman walked her dog alone on a secluded path.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Sgt Darren Taylor, from Hoyland Safer Neighbourhood Team, said incidents like this in the area "were rare".

He said "Officers from Hoyland Safer Neighbourhood Team will continue to focus policing in the area and deal with any issues of concern from local people surrounding the matter."
