A main road into Guildford town centre has been closed following a fire at two semi-detached houses which broke out just before midnight.

Firefighters remain at the scene of the fire, which started on the first floor of one of the houses in The Chase.

One of the properties contained a propane gas cylinder, and a police cordon is in place around the building.

No-one was injured in the blaze, which was tackled by 40 firefighters. Traffic is being diverted via The Oval.

'A bit chaotic'

A neighbour told BBC Surrey she saw "massive" amounts of smoke coming from the fire, but no flames.

"Then I saw all the fire engines - it was all a bit chaotic," she said.

Eddie Roberts from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, said "We were faced with a very difficult fire.

"There was a lot of smoke and the conditions were fairly still so the smoke tended to hang around and drift down."
