Plans for a new cinema and restaurant complex in Londonderry could bring more than 200 jobs to the city.

A planning application has been lodged for a 10-screen cinema development on the site of the former Perfecseal factory on the Buncrana Road.

The developer, Ardtullagh Holdings, said an additional 150 jobs would be created during construction.

DUP MLA Willie Hay called on the Planning Service to make sure the project was brought forward quickly.

"This is a good news story for Londonderry and I warmly welcome the project. It's particularly welcome at a time of serious recession," he said.

The 10-screen cinema will have seating for 1600 people, alongside six restaurants, a children's soft play area and free onsite car parking.

SDLP councillor and chair of the Derry City Council planning committee, Brenda Stevenson, said the proposals were a sign of confidence in the region.

"Plans to increase local cultural and tourism attractions are something which I am sure that the planning service will give appropriate consideration to in this difficult economic climate," she said.

"In an area where we have the highest number of under 16s in Europe, leisure facilities will be a very welcome addition."
