Secretary of State Owen Paterson has reaffirmed his support for the Derry/Londonderry UK City of Culture bid.

Mr Paterson was in Derry on Friday visiting the Ilex Urban Regeneration Company.

Derry is short-listed along with three other cities- Birmingham, Norwich and Sheffield- to become the UK's first City of Culture in 2013.

The winning city will be announced in Liverpool on Thursday 15 July.

"In a city that boasts everything from the Undertones to Seamus Heaney, the Field Day Theatre Company, Dana, Phil Coulter and many others, a place that is home to talent, creativity, energy and strength the bid deserves every success," said Mr Paterson.

"While some call it Londonderry and others Derry, I'm sure what we want to learn is that this hugely impressive bid is successful next Thursday."
