Burglar targeted homes of Norfolk and Suffolk elderly

A burglar who targeted homes for the elderly and disabled in Norfolk and Suffolk has been jailed for six years.

Anthony Roper, 34, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to three burglaries in Norwich and asked for 10 similar offences in Lowestoft to be considered.

Recorder James Wood at Norwich Crown Court said: "This was burglary of the meanest kind - targeting the elderly."

Lawyer Michael Clare said three family deaths plunged him back in to heroin addiction after conquering the habit.

When arrested he co-operated with police and wrote apology letters to his victims showing genuine remorse, his lawyer said.

Prosecutor Nick Methwold said Roper took jewellery and on one occasion an elderly person was present in bed during a break-in.
