Fresh support for cancer patients in north Derbyshire

People affected by head and neck cancer are being invited to join a new help group in Derbyshire.

Staff at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital have set up the support group.

Although it is a relatively rare form of the disease, its effects can be very devastating for people who have it, experts say.

Sharon Stoddart, one of the nurses involved, said patients need support as surgery can leave them with very visible scars.

She said: "After the surgery very often they are deformed, probably on one side, if they've had parts of their face reduced - not removed as such - if they've had bones and soft tissue removed there is obvious deformities.

"They themselves probably feel that people are staring at them."
