Flood protection work for County Durham village

Work to cut the risk of flooding to homes in a County Durham village has begun.

More than £800,000 is being spent on the project in Easington Colliery, near Peterlee, by Northumbrian Water.

The scheme involves constructing 1,076 ft (328 metres) of new sewer piping and building an underground storm water storage tank.

A company spokesman said some streets in the Crawlaw Road area would have to close during the four-month project.
