Dead Somerset diver was ex-Royal navy man

A diver who died after getting into difficulties off the Dorset coast has been identified as a 37-year-old former member of the Royal Navy.

Stephen John Cheshire, from Yeovil, Somerset, resurfaced too quickly while out diving from the Wey Chieftan 4 off Portland Bill on 5 July.

He was airlifted to Dorchester County Hospital by Portland Coastguard, but was later declared dead.

An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned at Blandford on Monday.

Dorset police have been informed of the death and are investigating the circumstances.
