The 41-year-old was in a suspect's home in Elizabeth Avenue when it was raided by police at 0500 BST.

He collapsed and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police believe it was a drug overdose.

Twelve people were arrested during the raids at a number of addresses. The dead man was not one of the suspects being targeted, police confirmed.

About 200 officers were involved in the raids, which covered 10 homes in Stockport and one in Leicestershire.

Ch Supt Rebekah Sutcliffe said: "This morning's operation was aimed at targeting those involved in the sale and supply of drugs.

"We will be carrying out a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death."
