Cartoon grannies are a hit in Dubai

The UAE has been working hard to move away from its image as an oil-based economy and instead develop its creative side.

The latest initiative by Dubai is the launch of the Cartoon Network in Arabic, which, from this week, will air translations of well-known English-language cartoons as well as tap into local talent and air Arabic animations.

The most famous of these local cartoons is called FREEJ. Created by an emiratii, it follows the adventures of four grannies living in Dubai.

It's taken the region by storm and has big plans for the future, as Katy Watson found out when she went to meet its creator.
