Car maker Ford announces a profit of $1.7bn

Ford is expected to show just how profitable a US carmaker can be when it reports results on Tuesday.

Sales of pick-up trucks are thought to have helped the company make a profit of around $1.3bn in the last three months - not bad given the slow US economy.
