China resumes rare earth exports to Japn

Japan has confirmed that shipments of rare earth minerals have left China. The resumption comes two months after Tokyo said exports were being held up by a territorial row.

Rare earth minerals are used in a range of electronic goods including flat screen televisions and computers.

China has long dominated the industry but Japan may not have to rely so heavily on it in the future, as it is negotiating a deal with Australia.

John Meyer, head of resources at Fairfax Investment Bank told the BBC that it is cheaper to mine and produce rare earth minerals in China.
