VAT to rise to 20% from midnight

Today is the last day for shoppers to beat the VAT rise. It goes up from 17.5% to 20% at midnight.

Businesses are warning that the move will put thousands of jobs at risk and could lead to less tax revenue flowing into the government's coffers.

The Labour leader Ed Miliband says the VAT rise is the "wrong tax, at the wrong time."
