UK new car sales rose by 1.8% in 2010

More than two million cars were sold in the UK last year, that's a modest 1.8% up on 2009, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The fleet market did well, rising by over 10% but volumes of sales for private cars were hit by the end of the Scrappage Scheme in May last year.

New car sales fell 18% in December compared to the same month a year ago and the market is forecast to decline further this year.

BBC business correspondent Maryam Moshiri spoke to Paul Everitt of the Society of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers.
