UK retail sales suffer biggest fall on record

Britain's High Street shops have suffered the biggest fall in sales on record, according to figures published this morning.

The British Retail Consortium says total sales last month were down 1.9% on the same period last year - that is the biggest fall since it began collecting the figures 16 years ago.

Director General of the British Retail Consortium Stephen Robertson told BBC Breakfast that the figures are "very poor indeed".
