Fashioning furniture in Middle East

For one furniture-maker, bringing together his Middle Eastern heritage with his interest in modern pop culture is making him a craftsman in demand.

Khalid Sharan trawls local markets for antique furniture and rare fabrics and then combines his pieces with images of famous faces such as Umm Kulthum, one of the Arab world's biggest celebrities, as well as Madonna or Marilyn Monroe.

He is developing a following for his pieces but it is not without its challenges.

Khalid has had to adapt his business to cope with the global downturn and sees more problems ahead - as upheaval in Syria threatens his supply of key materials.

Simon Atkinson reports.
