Why new smartphone technology is bad for phone firms

European phone companies are not enjoying boom times at the moment with disappointing profits from Telecom Italia and KPN.

Today it is the turn of the world's largest mobile operator by revenue, Vodafone, to update the markets.

Analysts expect that a poor performance in Europe will contribute to weak full-year results.
