Will Maradona help UAE football?

Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona is set to become among the world's highest paid managers when he joins Dubai side Al Wasl next month.

The signing surprised the football world given the UAE is a footballing minnow - and that Al Wasl play in just a 12,000-seater stadium with crowds just a fraction of that.

So is the Maradona move simply motivated by a lucrative contract or, with Qatar to host the World Cup in 2022, is it another indication of the region becoming a bigger player in world football?

Simon Atkinson reports.
