'Poor figures' for May retail sales

Retail sales dipped in May as a result of customers' unwillingness to spend, retailers have said.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said sales values in May fell 2.1% compared with May 2010.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said the poor figures were down to low consumer confidence, with people nervous about jobs and the future of the economy.
