Why are so many shops closing?

Hundreds of shops are set to close this summer after a sudden rush of administrations and company restructurings put their future in jeopardy.

Last week 30 Habitat shops were put into administration and Homeform, the owner of Dolphin Bathrooms and Moben Kitchens collapsed.

These two failures alone could put 3,700 people out of work.

The future of Jane Norman, the stricken women's fashion retailer hangs in the balance, and Clinton Cards is thought to be radically restructuring its business.

Tim Danaher is the editor of Retail Week and he told the BBC that shops are struggling because the high street is crowded and people simply do not want to spend money.

He also said that he believes Habitat failed because other companies came and ''did it better''.
