Redwood: EU budget request 'foolish'

The government has criticised a call by the European Commission for a 5% increase in the EU budget as "completely unrealistic".

The controversial proposal - for the seven years from 2014 - comes despite calls from some member states for a budget freeze.

The plans would set EU spending at almost £900bn for the period.

Negotiations over the proposal are expected to run well into next year.

The MP John Redwood told the BBC he thinks the increase is "foolish" and he hopes the country will use its veto to prevent it.
