Fall in spending hits UK economic growth
The UK economy grew by 0.1% between April and June, less than the 0.2% estimated previously, according to the Office for National Statistics.
The news comes as supermarket group Tesco reported a fall in underlying sales in the UK.
Consumers facing government austerity measures, rising prices and pay freezes are believed to be more cautious about what they spend.
