EU blocks Deutsche Boerse, NYSE merger

The long-mooted, merger between NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Börse of Germany has been called off.

European competition regulators formally opposed the deal because they believed the combined exchange would wield too much financial power in the trading world.

Both companies say they will now focus on smaller acquisitions to boost their existing businesses.
