Labour calls for Budget leak explanation

The Labour MP Chris Leslie has described leaks of the detail of yesterday's Budget to the media as an insult to the primacy of parliament.

Asking an urgent question in the Commons he demanded to know why so much detail of the speech was given to reporters in advance.

He accused Chancellor George Osborne of treating parliament as a "peripheral afterthought" and called for a full leak inquiry to be launched.

The Treasury minister David Gauke said there was a reasonable explanation because the Budget was presented by a coalition government.
