Last French bastion of steel making to close permanently

Workers in north eastern France occupied the site of two idle ArcelorMittal steel furnaces on Monday, as management and unions met in Paris to decide their fate.

The furnaces have been out of operation since last year due to lack of demand.

The French president, Francois Hollande, had asked the company's chief executive, Lakshmi Mittal, to either restart the furnaces or put the facility up for sale.

Mr Mittal has now decided to close the site permanently.
