Food waste: The onions that fail the supermarket test

Around a third of all food meant for human consumption is lost or wasted before it is eaten according to the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization.

Supermarkets impose strict criteria about the shape and size of fruit and vegetables they will accept for sale.

Some farmers are working with food charities, such as City Harvest in the US, to make sure that food which does not make the supermarket shelves is not wasted.

Michelle Fleury travelled to an onion farm in Orange County, New York to see how the crop there measures up.
