Lottery system 'plays important role'

Research into a controversial lottery system for secondary schools in Brighton has found that it has failed to help the poorest pupils get into the best schools.

Simon Burgess from the University of Bristol, one of the report authors, described using the system in school admissions as a 'complicated problem' but said lottery systems play an important role in allocating places.
