University students urged to make informed choices

Applications for university courses next year are down by nine percent compared to those for 2011, according to the admission service for students Ucas.

The figures come as one in 10 teenagers says higher tuition fees being introduced next year could put them off going to university.

A survey of A-Level students for the BBC's Inside Out programme suggests many will consider apprenticeships instead or study closer to home to save money.

Universities minister David Willetts wants students to make well informed choices about what is the right option for them.
