National Union of Teachers: 'Too much spent on free schools'

The National Union of Teachers has warned that too many free schools are opening in parts of England where there is no demand for the additional school places they provide.

The union was responding to a report by parliament's public accounts committee, which said the financial management of some free schools was inadequate and that the system was too reliant on whistle-blowers to reveal when things went wrong.

The NUT's general secretary Christine Blower said the government had no coherent plan to identify where the schools were needed.
